Garden bonfires and waste burning

We’ve received a number of calls from members of the public about waste being burned in home gardens.

Our advice is simple: avoid garden bonfires wherever possible.

Please don’t use a garden fire to get rid of household rubbish, furniture or other waste. 

Garden fires can quickly spread to fences, sheds and properties, causing serious damage. 

Smoke can also affect neighbours and, in some circumstances, may be classed as a statutory nuisance.

Instead, compost or recycle as much as possible, or use your local council’s collection service for larger or bulky items.

If a bonfire is dangerously out of control and threatening to spread to a fence, shed or property, call 999 and ask for the fire service.

And while the weather remains warm…

Please remember that disposable barbecues should never be used in parks, fields or on moorland. 

If you’re heading outdoors, pack a picnic instead!
